A recent post on LinkedIn prompted me to write this post.
How well do you look after you in your business?
I know, having owned a busy salon and running my own business for many years, how tough it can be on you, the salon owner. Some days you feel like throwing in the towel, giving up on all the hard work you do, for seemingly little or nothing in return.
Some days I would ask myself if there was ever going to be a turn of events, if I could ever look forward to having some time out for me, to be with my family or my friends.
Well, you know what? You need that time out. You need to look after YOU!
You need to reenergise, refocus, rebuild and understand all over again why you are in this industry if you are to survive.
If you cant do that, then what you are doing is communicating negativity to your team, and to your clients, the ones who keep you in business. If you have been following my recent posts, you will know that to be in that mind space is not what you want to be thinking.
So, what can you do when you are feeling run down and a bit rough around the edges.
- Ask for help.
- Connect with your team. Find out who has qualities you haven’t tapped into that might give you the breathing space you are looking for. Delegate. All good leaders have to be able to delegate.
- Write a list. Note the things that you want to rid yourself of, and can. Do you have a staff member who might be able to take over the responsibility and take pride in doing so? Make sure you explain how valuable that would be for you and how grateful you will be. It will sort out the team members you have who have vision, empathy and compassion versus those who are just in a job.
Of course you can also advertise, network, or see if there are some local businesses who might do some contra with you in exchange for services.
Most of all, be true to yourself. You, your team and your salon relies on that.

Remember, look after yourself and have a wonderful Christmas!
