Its been Melbourne Cup carnival this week, and despite all of the fashion and frolicking that goes on and how distracting that can be, it had me thinking about winners, and what qualities they have that other people don’t.
Because if you are investing in a racehorse, you expect there to be results, and to achieve results there has to be a decent amount of preparation, training, hard work, perseverance and levels of achievement, and that’s before you can even think about entering a big race like the Melbourne Cup.
Good trainers have these characteristics, and they look for these in the horses they train, much like when we coach businesses, we look for certain qualities that are coachable, in order for fabulous results to be achieved.
So what are the qualities or characteristics that good trainers look for that have the potential to create a winner?
- Passion: joy at doing what they love
- Discipline: being able to follow the game plan and discipline their mental and physical ability to win
- Selflessness: being committed to the task and everyone who is supporting you to win
- Respect: respecting the trainer, the team (or rider) and the people who help you get where you want to be
- Perspective: knowing that practice makes perfect
- Courage: never backing down, whatever the situation they put in 100% effort
- Leadership: knowing its their job to deliver and have the support of the team
- Responsibility: knowing that there are things that just have to be done to allow everything else to function at peak performance
- Resilience: being able to bounce back positively after defeat
- Imagination: Winners visualise their success before they reach the finish line
Can you see yourself in this list?
Are you a winner or dare I say it… not a winner!
