One of the most contentious issues I had with staff was over uniform. Everyone wants to look good when they are at work, but how as a salon owner do you go about choosing a uniform that suits every therapist you have working for you?
Everyone has their own unique code when it comes to body shape and personal colours, and if you are wanting to project a fabulous image, its important that your staff look good. If they look and feel good, then the chances are they will perform better too and take a lot more pride in how they arrive to work.
I have had salon owners complain that their staff arrive with uniforms that are dirty, unpressed, generally looking shabby and this isn’t good as it can be a direct reflection of the type of work that they do throughout the day.
Allowing staff to personalize their uniform to suit their shape and proportion will result in a more positive attitude and presentation for them and your business.
So what can you do as a salon owner to ensure that your staff are well dressed?
- Consider the style and shape of your uniform in relation to size and proportion, how will it look on a size 8 compared to a size 16 for example?
- Think about the colour? There are universal colours that everyone can wear, and these include some of the neutrals, but it is important to ensure that your staff will not look washed out or overpowered by your choice of colour.
- Make it easy to look after, choose fabric that is stain resistant and washes easily.
- Allow for staff to make small alterations to ensure a good fit and look for them.
- Consider employing a style program to really understand what will work best for everyone. I recommend the My Private Stylist online program.
